Boasting over 100 years of malting heritage

Powells is family owned and operated by Grant Powell and his son, Michael. Grant is Australia's most experienced Maltster with more than 40 years experience in the production of malt in Australia, North America and Europe.

The company boasts over 100 years of malting heritage. Grant has 40 years experience in the production of malt in Australia, North America and Europe. His father, two uncles and his great uncle were all Maltsters. Grant’s first visit to a maltings was at the age of four to visit his dad, Ern, at work at the “Flinders Lane Maltings” (Melbourne), where he was Head Maltster and Manager. This was the beginning of a childhood spent around a number of Melbourne’s Malthouses, and also the beginning of an education in Malting and Brewing.

Grant studied at La Trobe University where he graduated as a Bachelor of Science and later completed a Graduate Diploma of Malting and Brewing Science at the School of Mines, Ballarat, Victoria. Grant is also a Diploma Brewer (IBD).

Grant is a well recognised Beer Judge, and has judged beers nationally and internationally for more than 20 years.  He has also been the Brewers and Maltsters Representative on The Australian Barley Board, a Member of The Barley Research Council, various GRDC committees and a representative on both the Victorian and South Australian Barley Quality Advisory Committees.  

Michael is the Operations Manager at Powells and is responsible for all production and logistics. Michael is an experienced Maltster and also has a strong IT and Training background.
